John was a good man and will be sorely miss by a contingent of us Raritan Rockets who he scorched on the hoops courts back in 1985-86. I met John again a few years later at Stockton where I got to view him from the stands. Always enjoyed hanging out with him after games and years later as he would take us out fishing on the Capt John. Our thoughts and prayers remain with John's family. I am most sure he is enjoying a water cruise or a round of golf right about now or just maybe a 20 foot jumper from the corner. God rest my friend

Sadly I just learned of Capt. John's passing this morning and I am devasted. My dad took me on the old boat when John Sr was still captain. Later on, when John Michael took over we would make a couple trips each summer and a love a fishing was born. Capt John was a big factor in that. He couldn't have been more welcoming and helpful to me as a little kid. I will never forget the first time he invited me up to his wheelhouse. I was in awe. Then on the way in from the trip he told me to take the wheel. That was the icing on the cake for a me as a child. It wasn't just the fact that every trip we went on he let me rise the boat back in to dock that I will remember, it is the talks we had and advice he always gave. Whether it was about school or basketball. When I learned he played also and played for Stockton we would trade stories. I ended up playing for William Paterson so we would share our NJAC war stories. When I look back on my childhood, one of my fondest and best memories will be the times I spent on that boat with my dad and the talks I had with Capt John. Not to mention the hilarious wisecracks he would yell down at us from the top deck. My only regret is that my son who I had planned on taking on his first trip on the Capt John this summer is that he won't get to experience the wonderful times I had on the boat or experience what a great man Capt John was. It was something I always wanted him to be able to do since the day he was born. And to do it with my dad also would have made it all the better. I can't help to shed a tear and think of the smile on Capt John face when I would have boarded his boat with my son who now plays basketball also. Sure there are other party boats, sure there are other captains. But as far as I am concerned there are none and I mean NONE like the Capt John boat and without a doubt not a captain as caring, knowledgeable, and a pure gentle soul as Capt John. I hope you rest in calm seas and the sun shine on you always. I will miss you, my dad will miss you. We will all miss you. And my son will know you through the stories we will tell him. Although I never got the chance to say it, I love you Capt John. Thank you for making my childhood what it was.
Best regards
Paul Jr.

I am so sad to have come across John's Obituary in our Facebook Lost Classmates page while reading about another Friend and Classmate who just passed away. I met John when we were just 12 and 13. We were just kids. I was also Friends with Heather and I have never forgotten either one of them. I moved to Florida back in 89 and have developed a love for fishing myself. About 2 years ago I found out that John was a Captain and operated the fishing boat. I immediately looked up the business and left him a message through his website. I'm not sure if it ever got to him but I was so hoping that on one of my trips back to NJ, I would get a chance to fish on his boat and share some fishing stories. My heart goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Connell, Heather and everyone else that is suffering with this tremendous loss!! Rest in Peace Captain John Connell....I'm so sorry I missed you!!

I want to express my heart felt condolences to Connell family. I met John over about 20 years ago when I worked as a Dockmaster for Semblers Marina in Sebastian Florida when he brought his boat down for the winter to do deep sea fishing out of the Marina. We hit it off instantly and became very good friends. Over the years I lost contact with him but never forgot what a special man he was and friends we became. When I learned of his passing it was like a dagger went through my heart. I know how hard it is to lose a loved one. John may you sail one more time into the sea and rest forever with the Lord my child. What will be will be. I will miss you my friend.

Went on his beautiful boat multiple times since moving here 6 years ago. On one trip, my sister and I commented on how well spoken he was and he mentioned being an ex principal from SI. Maybe he was or wasn't but the overall professionalism from him, staff and crew made going on his vessel a first class experience. I will never forget that. Peace be with you, John.

Our hearts and prayers go out to John Sr., Diane, Heather, Debra and Vanessa in your loss of John so unexpectedly. We were all devastated when we heard of your loss. Distance is hard when family is hurting. We all wish we could be there to help support and comfort you in this terribly difficult time. Reading all the wonderful tributes and memories of John, seeing how many people loved him and were touched so much by him is heart warming. God's plans are never easy to understand at times like this especially in one so young. John is now with his heavenly father and yet he will remain in each of your hearts and minds as you hold tight to the wonderful memories of him and his blessed full life. We continue to pray for strength, peace and Gods love to carry you through this time of grieving. Please know that we all grieve with you and that we love you all so very much!

My deepest sympathy goes out to the Connell family....way too young...I'm saddened with all my heart. John was my teammate and friend at Stockton and brought an energy and free spirit that can't be duplicated. John was like a second son to us. He and Ronny were friends beginning in High School. We took both with us to Hawaii. Ronny and John got earrings while we were away on another trip. They tried to hide it from us upon our return. Going on the boat for July 4th fireworks and the arrival of the tall ships are fond memories with John. We loved him and will never forget him. Rest Easy, Captain~
This seems fitting for a Sea Captain:

Gone From My Sight

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,
spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts
for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.
I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck
of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, "There, she is gone."

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,
hull and spar as she was when she left my side.
And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me -- not in her.

And, just at the moment when someone says, "There, she is gone,"
there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices
ready to take up the glad shout, "Here she comes!"

And that is dying...

As I am sure we all are in shock, this is a sad time - John Michael was such a great guy - I remember going fishing when he was about 4/5 and how he helped me with my line- When he was graduating HS I looked into some schools in the West for basketball and he told me he was going to Stockton - a great move as he played in 2 NCAA tourneys- When he and HM were kids, I took them to the circus, and Heather came to pick us up. they were both so animated and I was sleeping! And I will never forget our cross country trip - DON'T GET STUCK at STUCKEY'S
