James Joseph Carey

James Joseph Carey, 51, of Wilmington Delaware, passed away Tuesday May 30, 2023, at Christiana Care Health Systems Hospital of Newark, Delaware.

He was born in Brooklyn, New York and grew up in Matawan, New Jersey.  

James was a proud Navy Veteran serving his country during the Persian Gulf War in 1990 to 1991.  Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy in 1994, he transitioned into a civilian career as an HVAC Technician for many years.  

James was proud of his military service, his membership with the National Rifle Association, and was a member of his local Knights of Columbus Chapter in Delaware. 

James was also an avid gardener, painter, fisherman, and hunter. James loved all animals including his pet cats. He also enjoyed listening to the Grateful Dead and attending concerts with his family and friends.  

James was predeceased by his father William Carey Sr. and brother William Carey Jr.  He is survived by his loving wife Betty Jane (Stolp) Carey of Wilmington, Delaware; loving mother, Anne Marie (Gaw) Carey of Keyport, New Jersey; loving daughter Kristen Elizabeth Carey-Reed and husband Richard Reed Jr of Ingleside, Maryland; sister Mary Donohue and her husband Kevin of Cliffwood Beach, sister Patricia Nulty and her dear partner Joseph Bortono of East Brunswick, his cherished nieces and nephews: Michael Nulty and wife Kimberly Nulty, Keri Nulty, Tara Nulty, Shannon Nulty, Sean Donohue and wife Carissa Donohue, Casey Donohue and wife Jillian Donohue, and great nephew Jack Nulty. 

 James also leaves behind many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.

 At the request of the family James will be cremated.  

Friends and relatives are invited to a memorial visitation for James on Wednesday June 7, 2023 from 4-8PM at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place Keyport, New Jersey 07735.  

Everyone is invited to meet at the cemetery the next day for an interment of ashes on Thursday June 8, 2023 11AM at Cloverleaf Memorial Park of Woodbridge, New Jersey.  

All are welcome to join the family on July 2, 2023 at 11 AM at one of James’s favorite spots, Bellevue State Park for a Celebration of Life. 800 Carr Rd Wilmington, DE 19809 Pavillion #1
