Elizabeth Giaccio Obituary

Elizabeth Anne Giaccio of Bayonne, New Jersey, died on March 28, 2020 at the age of 66. Known to her friends and family as Bette Anne, she was born to James and Elizabeth (Dullea) Giaccio on March 10, 1954 at the Margaret Hague Maternity Hospital in Jersey City. She grew up in the Greenville section of Jersey City and attended Sacred Heart Elementary School. She graduated from Saint Aloysius Academy in 1972 and New York University in 1976 with a degree in sociology. She was a social worker in Hudson County before beginning a long-term career as a real estate agent in Hoboken. She traveled extensively to Italy, England, Scotland, Wales, Florida, and California. Bette Anne is survived by her husband Richard Cullen, her son Eric Groething, siblings Peter Giaccio, James (Carolyn) Giaccio, Kathleen (Donald) Hess, nieces and nephews Michael, Katherine, Meghan, James, and Elizabeth, and many cousins from the Festa, Petrillo, and Dullea families. Bette Anne was a heartfelt woman who loved her family deeply. Although they went their separate ways, she remained close with her first husband Roy Groething, who alongside family, cared for her throughout the years. In addition to her beloved son, she adored her nieces and nephews. She strongly valued time with family on holidays, especially at Christmas, and loved music, movies, and Italian food. She was also an avid fan of the New York Yankees. Bette Anne was dealt a difficult blow when she was diagnosed with Huntington’s Disease about ten years ago. She nevertheless remained stalwart and optimistic, continuing to live a full life in Bayonne where she met and married her husband Richard in 2017. She celebrated her 65th birthday last year, surrounded by family and friends. Arrangements will be postponed at this time due to the coronavirus pandemic. Interment will be private and a memorial service will be held at a later date. All support and shared memories are greatly appreciated at this time. Donations to the Huntington’s Disease Center at New York – Presbyterian Hospital are welcomed and can be made at https://www.columbiapsychiatry.org/give-volunteer.
