Gustavo A. de los Reyes

      Gustavo Alfredo de los Reyes, 91, of Morganville, passed away Friday July 13, 2018 
at The Solana Marlboro of Chelsea Senior Living.
     Gustavo was born in Havana, Cuba, and received the college degree of
Civil Engineer from the University of Havana in 1948 and married Mihri Martinez in
1950. 
     He was jailed for several weeks under the Castro regime, not for political purposes,
but for the stroke of bad luck of his phone number having been found on the person of
an anti-Castro conspirator.
    While in prison in Havana, he met William Morgan, an American
who rose to the rank of commandant in Castro's Army and was later the subject of a
book, The Americano. 
     After a trial in which he was found innocent, Gustavo came to the United States in
1961, first living in Florida before settling in Newark at the Ivy Hill Apartments and then Matawan for many years.
      As a civil engineer, he first worked for Edwards and Kelcey Engineers in Newark,
then CJ Kupper Engineers (where he helped design water treatment facilities for many
shore towns in the 1970's), and finally Schoor Depalma Inc. in Matawan.
     He was a ham operator for many years, call sign KA2HEX.
      Gustavo was predeceased by his parents Gaston de los Reyes and Julia (Garcia-Lavin) de los Reyes.
      Gustavo was survived by his beloved wife Mihri (Martinez) de los Reyes; his children 
Gustavo de los Reyes and his wife Annie Murray of Baltimore, Maryland; Sergio de los Reyes
and his wife Anne McGuire of Evanston, Illinois; Octavio de los Reyes and his wife Kathleen of
Barnegat; Mihri Napoliello and her husband Ralph of  Lake Como, as well as Patricia
Pickering and her husband Robert of Manalapan.
      Gustavo is also survived by 14 loving grandchildren and 14 precious great grandchildren.
      Day Funeral Home of Keyport, New Jersey was entrusted with the arrangements.
