Growing up in Marlboro, NJ there were few stores/job opportunities, but Mr. Roder gave me a chance and hired a quiet, longhaired kid of 16. It was a good part-time job when I was in HS and later at 18, when I needed it, he was able to get me hired fulltime when the company was hiring very few new fulltimers. When I was 20 he put me in charge of my first night crew, working the overnight in a store in Edison.
This enabled me to go to school during the day as I worked nights and then move on to the career I’ve had for the last 30+ years. In 58 years Mr. Roder must have given hundreds of kids their first job. He was the first person to make my very short list of people in the workplace who have earned my respect and actually taught me something in life.
My deepest sympathies to his family and friends, RIP Mr. Roder.
