William “Bill” R. McCarthy, 91, of Brick, passed away, Saturday, April 30, 2016 at home with his family by his side.  Bill was born in Jersey City, where he resided until 1970.  He moved to and resided in Hazlet until 2000, when he relocated again, settling in Brick.  From 1952, until his retirement in 1990, he worked for the Jersey City Fire Department, retiring as Battalion Chief.   Bill served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII.  He was also a communicant of St. Benedict RC Church, Holmdel, as well as an usher; and a member of the VFW Brick Post and the Professional Firefighters Association of New Jersey.

 

Bill was predeceased by his parents, James and Anna (McHugh) McCarthy; his wife of 27 years, Geraldine McCarthy and his siblings, Peggy Faller; James “Buddy” McCarthy and Patricia Dietz.  He is survived by his loving children, Sean McCarthy and his wife Eileen of Howell; Sheila Ferinden and her husband Bill of Leonardo; Kathleen Gorski of Scotch Plains; and Carroll Dokmecian and her husband Armen of Wyckoff; a sister-in-law, Anne McCarthy of Brick; a brother-in-law, Gordon Dietz of Oceanport; and nine cherished grandchildren, Aedan, Liam and Alannah McCarthy; Casey Ferinden; Richard, Kathryn, John and Matthew Gorski; and Kelly Dokmecian.  He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.

 

Visitation will take place on Thursday, May 5, 2016 from 4-8PM, at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport, NJ  07735; and Friday, May 6, 2016, 9:30AM, at the funeral home, with a 10:30AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Benedict RC Church, Holmdel.  Interment will be private.  In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in memory of Bill to the New Jersey Firemen’s Home, 565 Lathrop Ave., Boonton, NJ  07005.
