Walter G. “Mac” McKinley, 94, recently of Coconut Creek, Florida, formerly of Hazlet, passed away, Saturday, March 25, 2017, at University Hospital Vitas Hospice, Tamarac, Florida.

 

Walter was predeceased by his loving wife, Doris (Haberstick) McKinley; his parents, Walter and Louisa (Sallander) McKinley, Sr.; and his brother, Robert McKinley.

 

He is survived by his loving children, Barbara “Boo” M. Hyer and her husband Bill of Coconut Creek, Florida and Karen Serbe and her husband Bob of Hazlet.

 

Walter also leaves behind grandchildren, Scott W. Hyer; Dawn Gross and Robert Serbe; as well as a nephew, Craig McKinley and his wife Connie.

 

Walter proudly served his country in the United States Airforce, during World War II.

 

Walter was a member of St John’s United Methodist Church, Hazlet.  He joined the Township of Raritan First Aid Squad on August 19, 1958, as an associate member.  He was elevated to active membership status on January 6, 1959.  He was a lifetime member of the Hazlet First Aid and Rescue Squad, where he served for 58 years (8/19/58-8/19/2008) (1960 & 1961 Treasurer, 1962 & 1963 2nd Lt. Unit 2, 1964 & 1965 Asst. Captain Unit 1, 1966 1st Lt. Unit 1, 1968 vice president, 1969 township captain, 1973 & 1974 financial secretary, 1984 & 1985 president, 1988 & 1989, 1998 & 1999 assistant captain unit 1; 2005 & 2006 2nd Lt. Unit 2, current chaplain and delegate held for numerous years); a member of the Keyport First Aid and Rescue Squad; past State President and Chaplain Emeritus of the New Jersey State First Aid Council 11th District (1963 & 1964 elected secretary and again in 1965, 1977 & 1978 elected president, 2nd in Monmouth County to receive post); and past member and president and current chaplain of the Monmouth County Council of First Aid.  Walter proudly served 58 years to the Township of Hazlet and the State of New Jersey.  For many years, Walter was also a first-aid and CPR instructor.  Thank you Walt for all that you have done over the years.  You will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by your family and friends.

 

Relatives and friends are invited on Thursday, March 30, 2017, from 2-4 & 7-9PM, at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport, New Jersey 07735 and Friday, March 31, 2017, 9AM   at the funeral Home, with a 10AM service at St John’s United Methodist Church, Hazlet.  Interment will follow at Atlantic View Cemetery, Manasquan.

 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. John’s United Methodist Church, Hazlet; Hazlet First Aid & Rescue Squad and/or Keyport First Aid & Rescue Squad.
