Joseph W. Cole, 81, of Keyport, passed away, Thursday, November 24, 2016, at home.  He was born in Perth Amboy, resided in Union Beach, prior to settling in Keyport in 1966.  He worked for Needham’s Motor Service, Rutherford, for 16 years with the Teamsters Locals, #560 and #701.  He also worked as a truck driver for Straub Lincoln Mercury, Keyport for 27 years and most recently, Tom’s Ford, Keyport, retiring in 2013.  Work was Joe’s hobby and he worked until the age of 78.

When he was 5, his family was separated and he entered nine foster homes until 17.  At 12 years of age, he worked on a farm driving a tractor, caring for and raising prize animals.  This is when he learned his love of working and animals, particularly dogs.  His current beloved dog was Hope.

With determination in adulthood, he turned his life around from “rags to riches.”  He became a self-made man.

Joseph was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.  He was driven and a very generous and caring person.  He was not your average individual.

Joseph was predeceased by his beloved wife, Dorothy S. Cole in 2013; his parents, Joseph W. and Sarah E. (Pitcher) Cole; and his brother, Kenneth Cole.  He is survived by his loving children, Joseph W. Cole, III of N. Middletown; David A. Cole and his wife Susan of Brick; and Catherine Anne Smith and her husband Stephen F. of Keyport; two brothers, Clarence and Ronald Cole; six cherished grandchildren, Anita, Joseph W. IV, Susan, Leigh Anne, Damien and Amanda;  13 precious great grandchildren; and many half-brothers and half-sisters.  He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 27, 2016, from 2-4 & 7-9PM, at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport, NJ  07735; and Monday, November 28, 2016, 9:30AM,  with a 10AM service at the funeral home.  Entombment will follow at St. Joseph Mausoleum, Keyport.  You may post a condolence to the family or obtain directions to the funeral home at www.dayfuneralhome.com.
