John F Conte Sr.

John F. Conte, Sr., 80 years old, completed his earthly journey on Sunday, April 15, 2018. Born June 23, 1937 in Utica, New York, he led a full life, leaving behind four children and five grandchildren. A man of adventure and travel, John served in the U.S. Navy in the 1950s and lived in California, Florida and Nevada as well as New Jersey and New York City. His last moments were spent joyfully playing with his grandchildren and he departed surrounded by loved ones. All those who knew him are heavy in heart but grateful that he is at peace. 

Raised in upstate New York, the boy left Utica for Manhattan - but Utica never left the boy. He graduated from Procter High School in Utica and went on to earn a Bachelor Of Science degree in Public Relations from Utica College of Syracuse University in 1965. Determined to live life on his own terms, John loved all things Italian, was a photography and dark room enthusiast and an avid collector of jazz LPs. During his long public relations career with the U.S. Postal Service he spent time answering children’s letters to Santa Claus which led to an appearance on MTV’s “Totally Pauly” show. In his later years he cherished time with his grandkids, enjoyed good food and wine and loved a card game, the horses and football - especially if he could bet on them!

He is survived by his children; sons Steve Conte of New York City, John F. Conte, Jr of New York City, Jeff Conte of Matawan, NJ, daughter Jennifer Conte of Matawan, NJ and their mother Rosemary Conte of Matawan, NJ; his in-laws Hadda, Lisa, Lisa and Tom, five grandchildren; Crystal, Jon, Leo, Zia and Baz, sister Rose Marie Love of Las Vegas and an extended family that he adored. Cousin Cathy Proscia was a constant presence during John’s last weeks, assisting him and making him smile. Those fondly remembering him are friends from all over the country whom he met on his long and remarkable journey. 

Visitation for relatives and friends will be Sunday, April 22, 2018 from 2-6 pm at Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport, NJ. A gathering will take place at 9am Monday at the funeral home followed by a 10am mass at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at 376 Maple Place, Keyport, NJ. Entombment will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
