Annabelle H. Guarino, nee Cherney, passed away on October 15, 2016. She was 95 years of age. Annabelle was a resident of Victoria/Atrium Health Care in Matawan for the last three years. Annabelle was born in Yonkers, New York on June 8, 1921. She was a resident of Union Beach since 1925, until her and her husband Michael moved to Hazlet in 1997. She graduated from Cottage Park School, Union Beach and Julia Richman High School in New York City.
She was a Charter member of the Union Beach American Legion Auxiliary unit 321; past Monmouth County President of the American Legion Auxiliary; past state president of the American Legion Auxiliary; a member of the National Executive committee of the American Legion Auxiliary and past Chapeau 8/40 State of N.J.
Annabelle was a past president of V.F.W. 4247 Ladies Auxiliary of Keyport. She was a member of the Altar-Rosary Society of Holy Family RC Church, Union Beach and Union Beach Senior Club. Annabelle was a lifetime member of the Girl Scouts since 1932 and received many awards as an Adult Scout.
During World War II, she worked for the Army Signal Corps. She trained at Monmouth College to become a Telephone Engineer. She worked on various communication projects and developed a telephone cable covering that could be used in all areas of operations. Annabelle also trained many solders in the installation of telephone wire in the field. She remained with the Signal Corps until 1947.
Annabelle was predeceased by parents, Rudolph and Anna Cherney; brothers, Rudolph Cherney, John Cherney, Frank Cherney, and Charles Devlin; and a sister, Margaret Bothers; and by her first husband, Harry R. Breil in 1963; and her second husband, Michael Guarino in 2000.
She is survived by her sister, Mary Jane Dietrich of Florida; son, Francis Breil and daughter-in-law, Suzanne Breil, daughter, Amelia Florentine of Akins, South Carolina; daughter, Harriet States of Belford, New Jersey; and son-in-law, Kenneth States; grandchildren, Sharon Breil and husband Eugene Choborda; Christian Breil and wife Melissa; Jennifer States-Young and husband Ray Young; Jacqueline States and her life partner Carly; Amalia, Angelo and Dominic; great grandchildren, Bryann States, Faith Molitor, James Breil, Sean Breil, Emily Breil, Kaylan Lefferts, Savanna Young and Paitynlee Young; and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted with Day Funeral Home, 361 Maple Place, Keyport, NJ 07735. Visitation will be Thursday, October 20, 2016, from 2-4 & 7-9PM at the funeral home; and Friday, October 21, 2016, 9AM at the funeral home, with a 10AM Funeral Mass at Holy Family RC Church, Union Beach.
