Thomas B. Larkin, 73, of Monroe, passed away, Monday, March 30, 2009, at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, New Brunswick.  

Born in Newark, he resided in Matawan, Hazlet and Keyport, before moving to Monroe one year ago.  He was employed as an electrician with Anheuser-Busch, Newark for 30 years, retiring in 1997.  He was a communicant of St. Joseph RC Church, Keyport; a member of IBEW Local #164; Knights of Columbus, Keyport; American Legion, Matawan; associate member with the Washington Engine Company, Matawan; and the International Order of the Alhambra.  He served his country in the Air Force during the Korean Conflict.

Thomas was predeceased by two sisters, Doris and Janet West; and two brothers, Ted and William Larkin.  He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Kalieta Larkin; his children and their spouses; William and Renee Larkin of Keyport; Mary and John Farrell of Lawrenceville; Thomas and Rose Larkin of Lambertville; and Edward Larkin of Long Branch; three sisters, Elaine Aumack of Keyport; June McNulty of Bayville; and Claire Tomasello of Lakehurst; and six grandchildren.

Marion (Holland) Ortlieb, 85, of Hazlet, passed away, Monday, March 30, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  

She was born in Jersey City.  She worked with the Hazlet Twp. Recreation Department for 20 years.  She was a member of the Golden Achievers; the Holy Family Golden Age; the Hazlet Seniors; the Holy Family Altar Rosary as vice-president; and past president of the Jaycettes.

Marion was predeceased by her husband, Al Ortlieb; two brothers, Jack and Ed Holland; and a sister, Ann Kelly.  Surviving are her children, Steve Ortlieb and his wife, Debbie, who has been like a daughter to her, of Holmdel; Jim Ortlieb and his wife, Mimi Devens-Ortlieb of Los Angeles, CA; four grandchildren, Mike Ortlieb; Denise Ortlieb-Herbert; Grainne Ortlieb; and Helena Ortlieb; and three great-grandchildren, Mikey Ortlieb; Tyler Herbert; and Sean Herbert.

Peter John Feiling, 71, of Keyport, passed away, Monday, March 30, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  

Born in Elizabeth, he resided there before moving to Keyport in 1967.  He was a teacher at Keyport High School for 30 years.   In the mid 50’s, along with his father, they built Keyport Marine Basin, selling it in 1976.

Peter was predeceased by his parents, John and Marie Gurski Feiling.  He is survived by his wife, Jean Mitchell Feiling; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Kim Feiling of Freehold; a daughter and son-in-law, Kara and Dain Fitzgerald of North Carolina; four grandchildren, Jasmine and Dylan of Freehold; and Erin and Paige of North Carolina.

TINTON FALLS – EILEEN SMITH DOLAN died Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.  She was 47.

Born in Red Bank to the late James P. and Theresa R. Finck Smith, she resided in Hazlet and Howell before moving to Tinton Falls last year. Prior to her retirement last year, she was a clerk/typist at the Essex County Courthouse in Newark for 22 years.

Surviving are two daughters, Kelly Ann Dolan of Howell and Patricia Marie Dolan of Wildwood; siblings Joseph Smith of Langhorne, PA, US Army Corporal Michael Smith of Ft. Hood, Texas and currently stationed in Iraq, Maryann Young of Little Egg Harbor, Theresa Gonzalez of Nazareth, PA, and James P. Smith Jr. of Tinton Falls; three grandchildren, Cassandra Lesoine, Jacqueline Galindo-Dolan and Christian Galindo-Dolan; and she leaves behind a plethora of friends and family.

KEYPORT – ELIZABETH KARAISZ KERCHNER died Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Bayside Manor Assisted Living Facility in Keansburg.  She was 99.

Born in Hungary, she came to the United States, settling in Perth Amboy.  She was a Keyport resident since 1929. She and her late husband Michael owned and operated Kerchner’s flower shop for over 46 years before retiring in 1980. She was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, Keyport.

She was predeceased by her husband Michael in 1999; her parents, Mary and John Karaisz; sisters Mary Demetzky and Margaret Letso; and brothers John, Joseph and Steven Karaisz.

HAZLET – JOSEPH INTELISANO died Saturday, March 28, 2009 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  He was 84.

Born in Syracuse, NY, he resided in Italy until returning to the United States in 1947.  He lived in Perth Amboy for 36 years before moving to Hazlet 20 years ago. Prior to his retirement 22 years ago, he was a furnace operator at General Cable in Perth Amboy for 15 years. He loved gardening and grew the biggest vegetables and flowers; he had the ultimate green thumb. He was a member of the Cullen Senior Center, Hazlet.

Surviving are his wife, Antoinette DeMarco; a son, Anthony of North Brunswick; a grandson, Jason of Edison; sister-in-laws, Loretta Intelisano of Syracuse, NY; Gloria Wojnar, Dolores DeMarco, and Dorothy DeMarco, all of North Brunswick; a goddaughter, Mary Anna Clark, and several nieces and nephews.

HAZLET – JAMES P. GLEASON, a Pearl Harbor survivor, died Monday, March 23, 2009 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  He was 88.

Born in Orange, he resided in the Cliffwood section of Aberdeen for 58 years before moving to Hazlet 19 years ago. Prior to his retirement in 1981, he was an operating engineer for Local 825 Heavy Equipment Operators in South Brunswick for 35 years. An Army veteran of WW II, he was stationed at Scofield Barracks during the Pearl Harbor attack.  He fought at Guadalcanal and Luzon, and earned two bronze stars.  He was recently featured in a December, 2008 Asbury Park Press article. He loved gardening and had the biggest tomatoes; he enjoyed walking and was crazy about his family.  He loved going to breakfast at the Seaport Diner in Keyport with Joe.  He loved inventing different gadgets and was a Mr. Fixit.  HHHe loved the NY Yankees, and was truly liked by everyone. He was a communicant of St. Joseph Church, and was a member of the Cliffwood VFW.

He was predeceased by a son in law, Edward Conroy, a brother, John Gleason, and a sister, Cecelia Patricia Straut.
Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Winifred Dyer Gleason; five children, Colleen Gano and her husband Joe of Hazlet, Joan Gissubel and her husband Ronald of Port Monmouth, James Gleason and his wife Dana of Matawan, Kathy Devino and her husband Tom of Keyport, and Johnny Gleason and his wife Nancy of Morganville; 10 grandchildren, Colleen and her husband Brian,  Cindy and her husband Andrew, Eddie, Jessica and her husband Chris, Brian, Ronnie and his wife Melissa, Amanda, Dallas, Christopher and Delanie; four great grandchildren, Justin, Nicole, Kyleigh, Brady, and one on the way.

Robert J. Raba, Sr., 79, of Jackson, passed away, Monday, March 23, 2009, at home.  

Born in Bayonne, for over 13 years, he resided in Willow Springs, NC, before moving to Jackson. He was a chemical technician for over 40 years.

Mary E. (Marotta) Donofrio, 88, of Keyport, passed away, Sunday, March 22, 2009, at Bayshore Health Care, Holmdel.  

Born December 27, 1920, to Antonino and Theresa Marotta, she lived her entire life in Keyport. She was a 1937 graduate of Keyport High School. She worked for Mr. H.B. Thomas, owner of H.B. Thomas Store, Keyport, as a private secretary, for 40 years.  In her later years, she worked for Personal Management and Planning Company, Matawan, for nine years. She was an avid Yankee fan, enjoyed dancing, swimming and bicycling. She was a communicant of St. Joseph RC Church, Keyport.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, Thomas Donofrio. She is survived by a brother, Thomas Marotta and his wife, Helen, of Union Beach; a nephew, Thomas Marotta and his wife, Carol, of Debray, FL; relatives in North Jersey and South Florida; dear friends, Evelyn Kane and Lois Haggerty of Salisbury, MD; and Patricia McKeen of Toms River.

George Hayes Purdie, 89, of Keyport, passed away Sunday, March 22, 2009 surrounded by his family, at Medi Center, Neptune.  

 

Born in Kearny, NJ before moving to Matawan for 37 years and moving to Keyport 12 years ago.  He was employed as a Truck Driver with Chemical Lehman, Linden NJ retiring in 1980.  He served in the Army Air Corp during World War II. George loved going to Atlantic City and Monmouth Park. He was also a member of the American Legion at Medi Center in Neptune.

 

George was predeceased by his Wife, Margaret Purdie in 1984 and also his brother Charles and sister Hazel.  Surviving are two sons: George Purdie Jr. of Brick, NJ and his wife Betty, Scott Purdie of Cliffwood Beach, NJ and his wife Margaret; Stepson, Edward Moench of Old Bridge, NJ; and his wife Gail; Stepson, Fred Moench of Venice, FL and his companion Susan. He is also survived by 3 grandchildren and many step grandchildren.

David M. Mahoney, 70, of Laurence Harbor passed away with his family by his side on March 21, 2009 at the Bayshore Hospital in Holmdel. 

Born in Arlington, Massachusetts he lived in Roslindale & Fritchburg, MA before moving to Laurence Harbor 42 years ago. Mr. Mahoney was a Locomotive Engineer for 33 yrs for Conrail of NJ before retiring in 2000. He was a communicant of St. Laurence Church and an usher at the 12noon mass on Sundays. He was an avid hunter, fisherman and gardener. He was a member of the Pappy, Perry Rod& Gun Club for as long as it lasted. He also enjoyed his trips to Atlantic City and poker with his family. 

Mr. Mahoney was predeceased by two brothers Edgar and Arthur Mahoney. Survived are his wife Judith (Selinga) Mahoney, a son David M Mahoney of Laurence Harbor, two daughters Joanne Mehal of So. Anthony Almeida Fonseca, 68, of Matawan, formerly of North Carolina, passed away in Jamesburg on Tuesday, March 17, 2009.  

He was born in Jamaica, Queens.  Before retiring, he was a carpenter for 35 years with the NJ Carpenters Local #1342. Anthony enjoyed doing arts and crafts; gardening; and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He will be remembered for his friendly and outgoing personality that made him friends wherever he went.

Anthony was predeceased by a son, Joseph Fonseca; two sisters, Rose DeOlivera and Lena Pawlikowski; and two brothers, John Fonseca and Manuel Fonseca.  He is survived by his wife, Theresa Truelove Fonseca; five children, Donna Hallahan of Middletown, NY; Tony Fonseca of Jamesburg; Donald Fonseca of Spotswood; Elisa Intravartola of Jamesburg; and Richard Allegro of Spotswood; two stepchildren, Deborah Sykes of FL; and Ronald Almasy of Newark; a sister, Mary DeOlivera; 14 grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Lisa Marie Handel, 51, CREAM RIDGE – died Friday, March 13, 2009 at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick.  She was 51.

Born in Orange, she was raised in Morganville and was a long time resident of Cream Ridge.  Lisa attended UCLA and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, and completed two years of Law School at the University of South Western School of Law in CA. 

She was predeceased by her beloved mother, Rosina Handel. 
She is survived by her beloved family:  her father, Henry J. Handel, sister Dina, brothers Henry and Eric.  Also sister in law Kathleen, niece Christy Rose, nephew Eric Jr. and long time friend James Luckowitz. 

Lisa was passionate for helping others; she created as founder and president a non profit 501(c)3 called Nature’s Refuge, an organization created to care for abandoned and abused animals and teach respect and unconditional love for all life.

Lisa’s wish was to be cremated, as she did not desire a service or viewing.

Dorothy (Beladino) DiNardo, 76, of Manchester, passed away, Thursday, March 12, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  

Born in Mt. Vernon, NY, she resided in Hazlet most of her life, before moving to Manchester six years ago.  For 30 years, she was a waitress at Bahr’s Landing, Highlands, retiring 15 years ago.  She was a former communicant of St. Joseph RC Church, Keyport. 

Dorothy was predeceased by her husband, Claude DiNardo, in 1981.  Surviving is her son and daughter-in-law, James C. and Doreen DiNardo of Hazlet; her daughter and son-in-law, Claudia and Rudy Monti of Morris Plains; her siblings, Joseph Beladino of Florida; James Beladino of NY; Louise Docherty of Indiana; Evelyn Hughes of Indiana; and John Beladino of Tennessee; and her grandchildren, James and his wife, Amy; James; Matthew and Anthony.

Caroline B. Karpinski, 78, of Hazlet, passed away, Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Robert Wood Johnson University Medical Center, New Brunswick.  

She was born and resided in Newark, before moving to Hazlet 51 years ago.  She was a homemaker; a communicant of St. Benedict’s RC Church, Holmdel; a member of the Hazlet Senior Citizens; a former member of the Knights of Columbus Ladies Auxiliary #3402, Keyport; and a former softball coach, Hazlet.

Caroline was predeceased by her husband, Robert A. Karpinski, in 1984.  She is survived by her two sons and daughter-in-laws, Robert and Jennifer Karpinski of Freehold; Richard and Johna of Asbury Park; two daughters and son-in-laws, Karen and Drew Fuhrmann of Hampton, N.H.; and Lisa and Daniel Earl of Wall; and four grandchildren, Kimberly, Emily and Lauren Karpinski; and Meagan Earl.

Betty “Jane” Uptegrove, 80, of Hazlet, passed away, Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at Bayshore Health Care, Holmdel.  

She resided in East Orange, before moving to Hazlet 51 years ago.  She was a homemaker; a communicant of Holy Family RC Church, Union Beach; a member of the Altar Rosary Society; she was the Rosarian of the Year in 2003; and she made the Christening Bibs for all the Baptisms at Holy Family Church.

John P. “Bibs” Thornton, Sr., 59, of Keyport, passed away, Wednesday, March 11, 2009, at St. Barnabus Hospice at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. 

Born in the Bronx, NY, he resided in Cliffwood Beach, before moving to Keyport 25 years ago. He was a scientist in the Research and Development Department with IFF, Hazlet, for 28 years. He served his country in the Army during Vietnam; and he was a communicant with Jesus the Lord Church, Keyport.

John was predeceased by a brother, Christopher Thornton in 2004. Surviving are his wife, Annette Mangino Thornton; two sons, John Thornton, Jr. of Loch Arbour; and Joseph P. Thornton of Long Branch; and a daughter, Elizabeth Rose of Keyport; three brothers, Thomas Thornton of Tuckerton; William Thornton of Humble, TX; and Joseph Thornton of Leonardo; three sisters, Mary Bane and Tootsie Thornton, both of Leonardo; and Jacqui Hillman of Atlantic Highlands; and one granddaughter.

Josephine Louise (Dinowski) DePrima, 86, of Cliffwood/Aberdeen Twp., passed away on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital.  

Born in Wilkes-Barre, PA, she resided in Orange, before moving to Cliffwood 21 years ago.  She worked as an assembler with Bates Manufacturing, Orange, for 30 years, retiring in 1968.

Josephine was predeceased by her husband, Dominick DePrima; and a sister, Dorothy Hummel. She is survived by several nieces and nephews.

Elizabeth “Betty” Minor, 83, of Keyport passed away, Thursday, March 5, 2009, at home.  

Born in Union Beach, she was a lifelong resident of Union Beach and Keyport.  She worked at Hercules, Sayreville, during WWII.  She was a homemaker and a member of Community Reformed Church, Keyport. 

Betty was predeceased by her parents, Jusef and Jennie Sadkowski Kizakavich; and was the last surviving sibling of many brothers and sisters.  She is survived by her husband, Samuel Minor, a daughter, Barbara Allmer and her husband, Erich of Wall Twp.; a son, Samuel M. Minor, Jr. and his wife, Carmela, of Hazlet; five grandchildren, David, Kristen and Peter Allmer and Matthew and Kimberly Minor; and many nieces and nephews.

Joseph A. Sueiro, 78, of Brick, passed away, Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at Brick Hospital, Brick.  

Born in Manhattan, NY, he grew up in Washington Heights, moving to the Bronx, Hazlet and Keyport, before moving to Brick three years ago.  He was the store manager with Woolworths for 10 years; then 1001 Auto Parts, Keyport for 20 years.  He was a member and past trustee of the Keyport Elks.

Joseph was predeceased by a son-in-law, Nelson Philpot.  Surviving are his children, Barbara Duffield and her husband, Edward, of Manchester; Susan Shirak and her husband, Kenneth, of Little Egg Harbor; Joanne Middleton and her husband, Dave, of Wall; Stacey Philpot, of Manchester; and Joseph Sueiro, of Middletown; former wife, Loretta Sueiro, of Toms River; a sister, Nydia DiGangi, of Manchester; 11 grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Corporal Brian M. Connelly, Union Beach , N.J. , a combat engineer with Company A, 40th Engineer Battalion, 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division, died Thursday, February 26, in Adhamiyah , Iraq , from injuries suffered when his vehicle was struck by an explosive device.

 

Corporal Connelly was born September 14, 1982.  He graduated from Red Bank Regional High School, Red Bank in 2000, and also attended  Brookdale Community College, Lincroft.  Among his many interests were salt water fishing, video games and practical jokes. Corporal Connelly joined the Army in 2006.  He completed basic and advanced individual training at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. , in January 2007.  He joined the 40th Engineer Battalion, Baumholder , Germany , in January 2007 and deployed with his unit to Iraq in April 2008.

 

His awards and decorations include the Iraqi Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Service Ribbon and the Overseas Service Ribbon.  He has been awarded posthumously the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the Combat Action Badge. He has been posthumously promoted to Corporal.

           

 He was predeceased by his grandparents, William and Jean Connelly; his grandmother, Barbara Dammann; and his father-in-law, Robert A. Thomas, Jr.

 

He is survived by his wife, Kara Connelly, Union Beach; his mother and father,  Jean and Mark Dammann, Union Beach; his brother, Kevin Connelly, Union Beach; his grandfather, Carl Dammann, Holmdel; his mother-in-law, Mary Jo Cittadino, West Long Branch; his brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert A. BETTY JANE “B.J.” DOWNEY YANKOSKI of KEYPORT – died Saturday, February 28, 2009 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank.  She was 81.

Born in Newark, she resided in West Keansburg for 51 years before moving to Keyport 3 years ago. Prior to her retirement in 1989, she was a sales assistant in the jewelry department at Bradlees in Middletown for 10 years.  In addition, she was a school bus driver for Loorie Bus in Middletown for 15 years.

Surviving are her husband, William A. Yankoski; a son, William Jr. and his wife Bonnie of Mount Laurel; a sister, Ruth of Cheesequake Village; three brothers, James of Metuchen, Robert of Sayreville and Edward of Matawan; two grandchildren, William III and his wife Martha, and Melanie and her husband, James Hoxie; a step granddaughter, Ashley Hass; and a great granddaughter, Stefania.

HAROLD “Fred” SOBKO of LITTLE EGG HARBOR – died Saturday at Southern Ocean Medical Center, Manahawkin.  He was 87.

Born in Irvington, he resided in Sayreville and Morganville before moving to Little Egg Harbor 9 years ago. Prior to his retirement in 1985, he was a production worker at Hyatt Rollerbearing in Clark for many years. He was an Army veteran of WW II.

Surviving are his wife, Theresa D’Addio Sobko; two sons, Harry and his wife Kathi of Keyport, and Paul and his wife Judy of Bayville; and two granddaughters, Katie and Jessica.

WHARTON – M. JOAN WALLACE-MILLS died Friday, February 27, 2009 at home.  She was 79.

Born in Keyport, she resided in Bloomfield, West Caldwell, Parsippany and Cedar Grove before moving to Wharton 11 years ago.

She was a 1946 graduate of Bloomfield High School, and graduated from Berkeley College in 1947. Prior to her retirement, she was co-owner of Walter Mills Plumbing and Heating in Cedar Grove for 18 years. She was a member and past president of the Caldwell Womens Elks, and was a member, past corresponding secretary and past president of the Rotary Anns in Cedar Grove.  She was a member of the American National Red Cross, and served in the Womens Civil Air Patrol in 1941. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Wharton.

She was predeceased by her parents, James Paul Wallace and Mary Sullivan, and by a sister, Eileen Busse.
Surviving are three daughters, Cynthia Mills of Wharton, Karen Mueller of Manorville, NY, and Tricia Stolfi of Port Jefferson Station, NY; two grandchildren, Danielle Nicole Stolfi and Timothy Stolfi; and by her adored dogs Timothy and Sully, and her cherished cats Sage and Lakota.

Howard P. Schulze Sr. 71, of Brick passed away February 26, 2009 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

Born in Newark he resided in Newark, Irvington and then Old Bridge before moving to Toms River in 1987.
Howard had worked for General Motors in Linden before his retirement.

Surviving are his beloved wife Virginia Wyckoff Schulze.  His sons Howard P. Schulze Jr. and Raymond Schulze.  His daughters Lorraine Mateuszczyk and Jeannine Schulze, several Brothers and sisters and his 5 grandchildren.

Joseph W. Brown, 75, of Whiting, passed away Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at Van Dyke Hospice, Community Medical Center, Toms River, NJ.  

Born in New York, he resided in Maspeth, Queens, before moving to Whiting 16 years ago.  He was employed as a Hilo operator with Helena Rubenstein, Roselyn, NY; and then as an assistant manager with London Town Cars, Long Island City, NY, retiring at age 62. 

Joseph was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Mary Carroll Brown; three brothers and one sister.  Surviving are his wife, Mary M. Neefeldt Brown; two daughters and son-in-laws, Marilyn and Robert Gussmann of Aberdeen; and Diane and Robert Edelman of Glen Cove, NY; four grandchildren, Robert, Sharon and Melanie Gussmann and Robert Edelman; and a sister, Mary Mariani of Staten Island.

Robert J. Layer, 78, of Cliffwood Beach/Old Bridge Twp., passed away, Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  

Born in Brooklyn, he resided in Cypress Hills, before moving to Cliffwood Beach in 1961.  He served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict.  He was a retouch photo engraver with Alco Gravure, Hoboken, for 37 years, before retiring in 1985.  He was a church sexton with St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for 14 years.  He was a communicant and usher with St. Lawrence RC Church, Laurence Harbor and a former member of the Cliffwood VFW. He was a great fisherman, enjoyed boating and was a member of the Hazlet Wood Carvers Club.

Robert was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Frances (Kaufmann) Layer.  Surviving are his wife, Rose Pfannschmidt Layer; two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert and Lisa Layer, Jr. of Barnegat; and Brian and Anne Marie Layer of Cliffwood Beach; a brother, Joseph Layer of VA; two sisters, Lillian Quinlan of Smithtown, NY; and Frances Layer of CA; a brother-in-law, Mickey Pfannschmidt of Germany; and six grandchildren, Ryan, Tyler, Samantha, Kellie, Julianne and Jared.

Florence Walthers, 88, of Hazlet, passed away, Wednesday, February 25, 2009, at home.  

Born in Prudhoe, Great Britain, she resided in Flushing, Queens, before moving to Hazlet 47 years ago.  She worked as a nurses’ aide at St. Luke’s Hospital, Long Island, before becoming a homemaker.  She was a communicant of Holy Family RC Church, Union Beach.

Florence was predeceased by her husband, Harold Walthers, in 1981.  Surviving are two sons, James Walthers and his wife, Sue, of Howell; and Patrick Walters of Hazlet; and six grandchildren.

John J. Caliendo, Sr., 94, of Morganville, passed away, Tuesday, February 24, 2009, at Meridian Nursing and Rehabilitation, Shrewsbury.  

Born in Brooklyn, he resided in Matawan for 25 years, before moving to Morganville.  During the war, he was a welder for the Kearny Shipyards, and worked in a civil conservation camp in Idaho. He was the proprietor of Rural Body Works, Old Bridge, for 41 years, before retiring in 1989. He was a communicant and usher with St. Clement RC Church, Matawan; a member of the Knights of Columbus; a member of the Aberdeen Fire Department, originally known as Oak Shades Fire Department, in 1942, becoming exempt in 1991; and the Italian American Club, Keyport.

John was predeceased by his wife, Mary M. Conzalino Caliendo in 1994 and his siblings, Salvatore, Patsy, Rose, Tommy, Theresa and Ralph.  Surviving are his children, Nicholas and his wife, Joyce Caliendo; and John J. Evelyn Rockwood O’Bosky, 95, of Union Beach, passed away Wednesday, February 18, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  

Born in Augusta, Maine, she resided in Newark, before moving to Union Beach in 1947.  For 30 years, from 1958 to 1983, she was employed with Dr. William Orlacchio of Hazlet and Keyport, as a dental assistant, before retiring. She was a former president of the Dental Assistant Association. She was a communicant of Holy Family RC Church, Union Beach and a member of the choir.  Evelyn had a beautiful singing voice and sang on the radio with her sisters in Maine, during the early days of radio.

Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, Andrew O’Bosky, Jr. in 1999; her parents, George D. and Edith Mac Lean Rockwood; siblings, Kenneth Wilson, Clifford Wilson, Marion Wilson, Jessie Rockwood Gerrier and Eileen Rockwood Testa; and two grandchildren, Andrew J. O’Bosky, IV; and Dennis G. O’Bosky, Jr.  Surviving are two sons and daughter-in-laws, Andrew and Barbara O’Bosky, III of Red Bank; and Dennis and Toni O’Bosky of Springville, CA; a granddaughter, Kellie O’Bosky-Haas of Middletown; and three great grandchildren, Alyson and Abigail O’Bosky and Clare Haas.

Ann Towney, 95, of Laurence Harbor, passed away on Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at home.  

Born in Newark, she resided there before moving to Laurence Harbor 72 years ago.  She was homemaker.  Ann was a communicant of St. Lawrence RC Church, Laurence Harbor.  She loved her family above all else and the children of the neighborhood.

MARIA KUROWSKY “Marie” LAPA of TINTON FALLS – died Thursday, February 12, 2009 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune. She was 85.

Born in Perth Amboy, she resided in Matawan for most of her life before moving to Seabrook Village 10 years ago. Prior to her retirement, she was a secretary at EI DuPont in Parlin for many years. She was an active member of the 1st Presbyterian Church of Matawan for many years, and was a member of the Circle. She was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was predeceased by her husband, Frank F. Lapa Jr, and by her parents, Gustav and Gladys Sheppard Kurowsky. Surviving is a cousin, Carol Mehok of Punta Gorda, FL.

EILEEN M. MILLROY APPLETON of  CLIFFWOOD BEACH – died Sunday February 15, 2009 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  She was 59.

Born in Jersey City, she resided in Harrison for 32 years before moving to Cliffwood Beach 31 years ago.
Prior to her retirement 6 years ago, she was a customer service representative for Cablevision of NJ in Parlin for 17 years.

Surviving are her husband, Stephen; a daughter, Kimberly and her husband Michael Gecik of Middletown; a son, Arny and his wife Nicole Appleton of Old Bridge; two brothers, Charles Millroy of Little Egg Harbor and Kenneth Millroy of Manahawkin; a sister, Joyce Stiles of Effort, PA; and five grandchildren, Casey, Michael, Riley, Maddie, and Braeden.

MARGARET C. KING CRAWFORD of  UNION BEACH – died Saturday, February 14, 2009 at home.  She was 66.

Born in Long Branch, she resided in Hazlet before moving to Union Beach 44 years ago. She was a Special Olympic coach for the handicapped for 23 years, and was also a teachers technician with the handicapped for the Monmouth County Regional School District in Tinton Falls.  In addition, she was a floor aid worker at Regency Park Nursing Home in Hazlet, and Arnold Walter Nursing Home in Holmdel.

She was predeceased by her father, Theodore King.

HELEN B. KARPIE SCHULMEISTER of CHEESEQUAKE – died Saturday, February 14, 2009 at Raritan Bay Medical Center, Old Bridge.  She was 82.

Born in Hazelton, PA, she resided in Newark and Cliffwood before moving to the Cheesequake section of Old Bridge 60 years ago. Prior to her retirement in 1987, she was a quality control inspector for Revlon in Edison for over 20 years. She was a communicant of Most Holy Redeemer Church, Old Bridge.

She was predeceased by her husband, Charles in 1997, and by a son, Louis in 1994.
Surviving are a son, David and his wife Kathy Schulmeister of Old Bridge; a daughter Linda of Matawan; a brother, Daniel Karpie of Holmdel; three grandchildren, Enjelica, Alison and Matthew; and a great grandson, Zachary.

Elizabeth (Papai) Varsanyi, 83, of Edison, passed away, Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at Care One at the Highlands, Edison.  

Born in Hungary, she came to the United States in 1956, during the Hungarian Revolution, settling in Newark and then Edison. She was employed as an office worker with the Newark Board of Education for 25 years, retiring 30 years ago.  She was a Red Cross volunteer in Prague, prior to coming to America.  She loved reading and history; she was a wonderful cook and had an unconditional love for her family.

Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Julius Varsanyi in 1986; and her parents, Istvan and Rose Papai.  Surviving are her children and their spouses; Zoltan and Nancy Varsanyi of Matawan; Peter and Karen Varsanyi of Washington, D.C.; and Thomas and Maggie Varsanyi of Edison; a brother, Istvan Papai of Australia; six grandchildren, Veronica, Peter, Kristina, Steven, Christopher and Meredith; and three great grandchildren.

Jack P.Triolo, 78, of Matawan, passed away, Wednesday, February 11, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  

Born in Brooklyn, to Frank and Jenny Triolo, he resided in Red Bank, graduating from Red Bank High School, before moving to Matawan, 54 years ago.  He was employed as a construction technician with HNTB Engineering, Wayne, for over 20 years; and worked at St. John Vianney High School, Holmdel, for 12 years.  He was a communicant of St. Clement RC Church, Matawan, and also an usher as a Holy Name member of St. Clement. He was past captain, trustee, president and member with the Matawan First Aid Squad for over 35 years. He loved the Rangers, Yankees and Giants. He was past coach of Babe Ruth Teams; Matawan Braves and Matawan Hawks. He served his country in the Army during the Korean Conflict, from 1951 to 1953, as a Corporal; 25th Division 64F.A. “A” Battalion; Chief of Section of 105MM How, with 15 crewman under him, where he received the Good Conduct Ribbon, Unit Service Ribbon with Two Oak Leaf Clusters, the NJ Distinguished Service Ribbon, the Korean Service Ribbon, the UN Service Ribbon; and the President Service Ribbon with Three Stars.

Surviving is his wife, of 54 years, Frances Artelli Triolo; three sons, Frank Triolo of Belmar; Jack Triolo, Jr. of Matawan and Joseph Triolo and his wife, Denise of Old Bridge; and two grandchildren, Chelsea and Andre.

Rowland S. Seckinger, 71, of Keyport, NJ, passed away, Monday, February 9, 2009, at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  

Rowland was born in Savannah, GA, and although he moved a few times in his life, Wilkes-Barre, PA for 6 years; Nyack, NY for 10 years and Keyport, 19 years, his heart never strayed far from his southern birth place. Rowland was an Eagle Scout, Benedictine Military Academy (GA) graduate and United States Air Force and Marine peacetime veteran.  He attended Armstrong State College in Savannah, GA, and later received his MBA from King’s College in Pennsylvania.  He started working at American Cyanamid Company in Savannah, GA, as a young man and served at two other locations for 16 years, before transferring to Bound Brook, NJ, for 10 years, and eventually retired in 2000, concluding a 43 year career. Rowland was an avid and tireless volunteer, including Boy Scouts of America; Explorer Post founder and leader; American Red Cross; EMT; Solomon Lodge Mason (Grand Commandery Knight Templar of Georgia; York Rite Bodes of Free Masonry Georgia charter of Palestine Commandery No 7; Georgia Chapter No. 3 Royal Arch Masons); reserve member Keyport Fire Department, Lincoln Hose Company; treasurer Keyport Fire Museum; Keyport Environmental Commissioner; treasurer Twin Lights Historical Society (Outstanding Volunteer recognition 2005), the Shriners of North America/Alee Temple Shriners; and International Association of Machinists.  Rowland never met a stranger, lived to tell stories, and loved the sea.

Rowland was predeceased by his parents, Rowland Burroughs Seckinger, Jr. and Elnora Sturtevant Seckinger. He is survived by his wife, Marjorie Locke Seckinger; his children, Alison, Lorraine Crapse; Lenora Sturtevant Mesibov; Rowland Bishop Seckinger; Gregory William Brooks; and Karin Annette Sellite; two sisters, Barbara Seckinger Wall and Joan Seckinger Martin; and 19 grandchildren.

Frederick “Curly” J. Della Pietro, 85, of West Keansburg, passed away, Sunday, February 8, 2009, at home.  

He was born in Matawan.  Fred was employed as a machine operator with Atco Tile, Keyport, then as a heavy equipment operator with the Hazlet Twp. Road Department; and then became owner of Curly and Sons Clean-Up, before retiring in 1986.  He was a communicant of St. Ann RC Church, Keansburg.  He served his country in the Army during WWII.

Fred was predeceased by his wife, Alberta R. Comerford, in March 2008.  Surviving are his children, Frederick Della Pietro, Jr. and his wife, Pat, of Keansburg; Grace Wiggett of Hazlet and Thomas Della Pietro of Hazlet and his girlfriend, Chris; four grandchildren, Carrie, Justin, Jimmy and Kim; four great grandchildren, Jack Jr.; Joseph; Alyssa and Evan; and his dog, Harley.

Thomas J. Dougan,Sr. 67, of Union Beach, passed away Monday, February 9, 2009, at home.  

Born in Birmham, England, he resided in Upper Manhattan, before moving to Union Beach 36 years ago. He was employed as a chief engineer with Sovereign Hotel, Manhattan; then as a carpenter and engineer with NY Eye and Ear Infirmary, 14th and 2nd Aves., Manhattan; and a mail handler with the GMF Post Office, Eatontown, for 24 years.  He was a communicant of Holy Family RC Church, Union Beach; a former member of the Union Beach Board of Health; former youth soccer coach and founding member of the Soccer League with Hazlet and Union Beach; and the first and second vice-president of the Irish Federation of Monmouth County. He served his country in the Army during Vietnam.

Thomas was predeceased by his parents, Thomas L. and Margaret Small Dougan.  Surviving is his wife, Rosaleen Walsh Dougan; his children and their spouses, Thomas J. and Dawn Dougan, Jr. of Hazlet; Christopher and Winifred Dougan; Rosaleen and Brendan Greene; and Peter and Patricia Dougan, all of Union Beach; a sister, Kathleen Boltan of England; and 14 grandchildren.

William T. Armington Sr. 77 of Cliffwood Beach died on Sunday Feb. 8, 2009 at the Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel. 

Born in Bayonne, he moved to Cliffwood Beach 65 years ago. William was served in the Navy on the USS Fulton AS-11and then after being Honorable discharged he began a 20 years of service with the Island Seabee’s of Red Bank and was a Lifetime Island member X1. He was a Line Chief for Jersey Central Power & Light, Old Bridge for 40years retiring in 1992. Mr. Armington was also a member of the Lions Club of Laurence Harbor, a lifetime member of the USS Fulton AS-11, a Little League and Soccer coach, Laurence Harbor, a Scout Leader for the Laurence Harbor and Cliffwood Beach Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts and he was Santa Claus for all the local area organizations for the past 40 years. He loved his beloved cat Butterball. 

Surviving is his wife Doris(Demgard) Armington, his daughters Cheryl Armington of St. John, IN, Patricia and her husband Kevin Gleason of Lanoka Harbor, and a son William  T. Carroll Woolf, 92, of Cliffwood Beach/Aberdeen, passed away, Thursday, February 5, 2009, at Bayshore Health Care Center, Holmdel.  

Born in Sparkill, NY, he resided in Cliffwood Beach for the past 80 years.  He was employed as a security guard with Investigative Services, Inc., Sea Girt, before retiring in 1993.  He served his country in the Army during WWII.  He was a member of the St. Joseph Knights of Columbus and the Cliffwood VFW.

Carroll is survived by six nieces and nephews; and 23 great nieces and nephews.

Albert Rosato, 85, of Keyport, passed away, Wednesday, February 4, 2009, at Bayshore Health Care, Holmdel.  

Born in Cliffwood, he resided most of his life in Keyport.  He worked at Atco Tile, Keyport, for 25 years; then as an automotive machinist with Matty’s Auto Parts for 40 years, before retiring in May 2008.  He was a communicant of St. Joseph RC Church, Keyport; a life member over 50 years with the Keyport Hook and Ladder Fire Company; and life member and past commander with the VFW #4247, Keyport; a member of the Joe Pettinato Bowling League and the Sunday Mixed Masters League.  Al served his country in the Army during WWII.

Mary E. Hrabosky, 89, of Union Beach, passed away, Tuesday, February 3, 2009, at home surrounded by her loving family.  

Mary was born in Newark. She was a devoted mother and homemaker.  She was a parishioner with Holy Family RC Church, Union Beach; and an avid bingo player.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, John J. Hrabosky, Sr.; her parents, Richard and Margaret Ryan Duffy; a son, Richard M. Hrabosky; two sisters, Loretta Duffy and Anna Zelonis; and a great grandson, Brandon Hrabosky.  Surviving are her children and their spouses, Catherine and Mitchell Shade of Union Beach; John J. Born in Youngstown, Ohio, she resided in East Rutherford for many years before moving to Hazlet several years ago. Prior to her retirement in 1974, she was a seamstress for the Glamorize Company in New Jersey for 18 years. She was a member of the East Rutherford Seniors and the Hazlet Township Seniors.

She was predeceased by a brother, Tom Natale, and by a sister, Lena Furrillo.

Robert “Bob” S. Coiner, 65, of Hazlet, passed away, Sunday, January 25, 2009, at home.  

Born in Tacoma Park, MD, he resided in Brick and Wanamassa, before moving to Hazlet in 1998.  He was a logistician with the Naval Weapons Station, Earle, from 1962, until his retirement in 2000.  Since 1975, he was a member of the YRSC (Year Round Sports Club), Forked River; from 1965, he was a member of the Moose Lodge #1521, West Virginia; and from 1989, a Free Mason Ocean Lodge, Spring Lake. He served his country in the Navy during the Vietnam Era.

Bob was predeceased by his parents, Robert W. and Ruth Painter Coiner.  Surviving is his loving spouse and friend, Julia Coleman Coiner; a son, Robert T. Coiner of Red Bank; a son and daughter-in-law, Christian and Stacey Coiner of Howell; and a daughter and son-in-law, Bethany Lynn and Michael DeGilio of Ocean Twp.; a sister and brother-in-law, Ruth and Tom Shepard of Bradentown, FL; five grandchildren, Christina, Max and Michael DeGilio; and Rebecca and Brandon Coiner; and several nieces and nephews.

William H. Johanson, 88, of Knoxville, TN, passed away, Thursday, January 22, 2009, at the Knoxville VA Hospital.  

Born in Manhattan, he resided in Holmdel and Charlotte, NC, before moving to Tennessee, two years ago.  He was an office manager with Leif, Foster, Werle, Manhattan, for 35 years, retiring in 1982.  He served his country in the Army during WWII.

RAYMOND J. BENNINGTON, Jr.of CLIFFWOOD BEACH –  died Sunday, January 18, 2009 at Bayshore Community Hospital, Holmdel.  He was 70.

Born in Montclair, he resided in Laurence Harbor for 20 years before moving to Cliffwood Beach 44 years ago. Prior to his retirement 11 years ago, he was an iron worker for 37 years and past union president for Ironworkers Local 373 in Perth Amboy. He was a member and fundraiser for the Knollcroft S&A in Cliffwood Beach, and was a member of the South Amboy Elks.  He was a past member of the Laurence Harbor 1st Aid Squad, as well as the Laurence Harbor Fire Department.  In addition, he was a Laurence Harbor Little League Coach, a Pop Warner Football coach, and also coached at the St. Lawrence CYO.  He also played on the USS Sierra Navy Baseball team.  He was a Navy Veteran, having served on the USS Sierra during Peacetime. He attended St. Lawrence RC Church, Laurence Harbor.

Surviving are his wife, Nancy Stief Bennington; his children, Kim Mitchell of Lincoln, AL, Daniel of Jackson, Renee and her husband John Snyder of Inverness, FL, and David of Cliffwood Beach; three brothers, Robert of Old Bridge, Richard of Flat Top, WV, and Ronald of Howell; and two grandchildren, Jessica McClure and James Mitchell.
